10 March 2008 -Tyrconnell, The “Worlds Best Irish Single Malt”
Cooley Distillery is proud to announce that the Tyrconnell 10 Year Old Sherry Finish Single Malt Irish Whiskey has been selected as the “World’s Best Irish Single Malt Whiskey” aged 12 Years or under by an illustrious panel of independent whisky experts at the World Whiskies Awards in London.
This panel of judges chose Tyrconnell 10 Year Old Sherry Finish over the competitor bottlings that had made it through to the last round.
Tyrconnell 10 Year Old Sherry Finish will now represent the Irish as it goes head to head with the “World’s Best” Single Malt whiskies from around the world at the World of Whiskies Conference in Glasgow in April.
The Whisky Magazine, which run the World Whiskies Awards, assembled some of the best noses and experts in the whisky business to form an independent tasting panel.
These were the brave souls who tackled the large number of Irish whiskeys that entered the competition. Chaired by Dave Broom, this annual selection of the very best proprietary whiskeys evolved out of Best of the Best, the biannual tasting held since 2000.
The judging process started with the independent panel receiving samples at home and judging blind. This enabled the panel to whittle down the large number of entries to a select few that were then tasted by an invited panel from the International Whisky Industry on the eve of Whisky Live London last Thursday.
Jan 2008 - Tyrconnell Finishes First - 10 Year Old Tyrconnell Finishes Scoop Awards
The 10-year-old Tyrconnell Madeira and Sherry Finishes have both won coveted Irish Whiskey of the Year Awards. The 10-year-old Tyrconnell Madeira Finish was voted Best Irish Whiskey of the Year by Jim Murray, the renowned whiskey connoisseur and author of the Whiskey Bible, while the Tyrconnell 10-year-old Sherry Finish was voted Best Irish Whiskey of the Year at the Malt Maniacs Awards.
Tyrconnell Single Malt won a gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in late 2007 but the recent recognition of the 10-year-old wood finishes is a testament to this historic brands versatility. Tyrconnell Single Malt is named after an Irish racehorse that won the Irish Produce Derby in 1876 at odds of 100 to 1 and to this day this unique whiskey continues to defy the odds by winning countless awards.
Tyrconnell Single Malt whiskey is initially matured for 10 years in American Oak barrels. The “finishing” of the whiskey takes place for a short period of time in barrels that had previously contained other spirits such as Port, Madeira and Sherry. This process results in the smooth sweet fruity single malt absorbing the best elements of the barrel's previous occupants. This adds further complexity to the rich palate of the Tyrconnell Single Malt as the whiskey is infused with either the sweetness of a Sherry, the rich fruits of a Port or the spiciness of a Madeira.
Jack Teeling, Marketing Director for Cooley Distillery commented “We are delighted by the response of consumers and trade to our Tyrconnell 10 Yr Old Wood Finishes. It is a testament to the quality of the Tyrconnell Single Malt and the watchful eye of our Master Blender, Noel Sweeney, that these finishes have been able to win so many Internationally recognised accolades. These brand extensions do justice to this famous old brand and help to establish the credibility of Irish Single Malts within the whiskey industry.”
