Nose:
Sometimes nosing a Tyrconnell can be like sticking your head in a bowl of fruit salad. Certainly there is diced, freshly picked apple, hints of lime, some under-ripe plums and at the back of it all is some juicy malt, almost up ripened in character but not quite.
Taste:
A citrusy, young-malty feel is the first to make an impression. This is curious because for the first 10 seconds the whiskey manages to achieve neither sweetness nor dryness. Perhaps an indefinable complexity that hangs beautifully with some oilier notes means it achieves both with the two styles cancelling each other out until finally a sensual sweetness finds its way through. Also with the malt being light in build, some chocolate notes compensate to make for a chewable whiskey, Very attractive, indeed.
Finish:
In the end this whiskey pitches towards a dry character with the oak noticeable with some telltale bitter chocolate notes, though this is short-lived. .
Comment:
This is older whiskey than when initially launched, to be sure. But I feel the younger stuff had more finesse and richness. The present version is still enjoyable, nonetheless.
